Glacier structure influence on Himalayan ice‐front morphology

چکیده
We investigate the role of glacier structures in controlling ice-front morphology and dynamics four Himalayan lake-terminating glaciers over a 20-year period. At Imja, Trakarding, Lumdin Dang Pu glaciers, lake area was mapped between 2000 2020 using Landsat 5/7/8 Sentinel-2 imagery. Discrete flow units were identified, with (e.g., open crevasses, transverse structures, longitudinal structures) digitised finest resolution panchromatic bands each year (30, 15, or 10 m). Mapping revealed distinct pattern towards terminus that influence position are then exploited via iceberg calving events. Our structural analysis also illustrates subsurface conduits During conduit collapse, recession is enhanced, leading to along adjacent structures. Furthermore, our shows influences recession. Mass loss on Himalayan glacier endangers water resources
[1] Ice cores drilled from glaciers around the world generally contain horizons with elevated levels of beta radioactivity including Cl and H associated with atmospheric thermonuclear bomb testing in the 1950s and 1960s. Ice cores collected in 2006 from Naimona’nyi Glacier in the Himalaya (Tibet) lack these distinctive marker horizons suggesting no net accumulation of mass (ice) since at least ...
متن کاملEnvironmental Influence on Dental Morphology
Development is a complex phenomenon where the forming phenotype interacts with genetic and environmental inputs. Teeth are an important model for developmental studies and their development has been thoroughly investigated. However, despite of an extensive literature on the genetics of dental development, no studies have yet focused on the environmental influences on dental morphology. Here we ...
متن کاملGlacier and landslide feedbacks to topographic relief in the Himalayan syntaxes.
Despite longstanding research on the age and formation of the Tibetan Plateau, the controls on the erosional decay of its margins remain controversial. Pronounced aridity and highly localized rock uplift have traditionally been viewed as limits to the dissection of the plateau by bedrock rivers. Recently, however, glacier dynamics and landsliding have been argued to retard headward fluvial eros...
متن کاملSnow and glacier melt in the Satluj River at Bhakra Dam in the western Himalayan region
Streamflow in the Himalayan rivers is generated from rainfall, snow and ice. The distribution of runoff produced from these sources is such that the streamflow may be observed in these rivers throughout the year, i.e. they are perennial in nature. Snow and glacier melt runoff contributes substantially to the annual flows of these rivers and its estimation is required for the planning, developme...
متن کاملDramatic mass loss in extreme high-elevation areas of a western Himalayan glacier: observations and modeling
Rapid climate change at high elevations has accelerated glacier retreat in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. However, due to the lack of long-term glaciological measurements, there are still uncertainties regarding when the mass loss began and what the magnitude of mass loss is at such high elevations. Based on in situ glaciological observations during the past 9 years and a temperature-index ...
